About Brittany

Welcome to Brittany – no  longer a kingdom, no longer a duchy, but still proud and beautiful. Brittany, the most westerly of France’s 22 mainland regions, occupies a large peninsula between the English Channel to the north and the Bay of Biscay to the south. Divided into four departments, it has a long, rich history and is a delightful place to explore offering a warm welcome to those who choose to settle here. The region is diverse and so is the property available, from state of the art to tumbledown, manoirs to fishermen’s cottages and everything in between.

It’s so easy to get here via the ports at Roscoff and St Malo, fly into Rennes, Brest or Dinard or come on the train. Brittany is one of the most accessible areas of France and so lovely, why drive through it to go elsewhere?

14th July

You may know it as Bastille Day as it is referred to around the world, but in France it is known as La ‘Fête Nationale’ and here in Brittany, I never hear anyone called it anything other than  ‘le quatorze juillet’.  It commemorates the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison during the French Revolution and the celebrations held a year later, in 1790 to mark the conclusion of the revolution.

There will be a huge parade in Paris and fireworks all weekend the length and breadth of France. In Brittany many of the celebrations and pyrotechnics are held at the coast with displays over the sea creating a magical effect. It stays light well into the evening in Brittany so many displays start at 11pm or even later, after it has finally got dark.  The atmosphere is delightful with families and people of all ages gathering together to mark this national event.

An opportunity to purchase a beautifully designed eco-friendly house in Brittany – €466,400

Built from Canadian White Cedar wood this house has 220m2 of living space and has been designed to let in streams of light.

This house is approached down a tapered drive of natural shale, situated in a quiet hamlet within minutes of the medieval town of Dinan, on the edge of a village overlooking the countryside.
As you enter this wooden house, the open plan 40 m2 living/kitchen area is stunning with it’s oak floor and wood insert fireplace which heats the house.
Off the kitchen is a well arranged utility room / pantry with back door to the garden.
Also downstairs is an office and snug, downstairs bedroom suite with bathroom and walk in wardrobe.
For those of you looking for a “working from home” from the living area, there is a music room, with spiral stairs up to a bedroom with its own patio door.
The bespoke oak staircase leads up to a mezzanine landing, off which are 3 bedrooms and shower room.
There is also a habitable outbuilding which is used as a garage, workshop and storage.
Ideally located on the edge of quiet hamlet, close to the Medieval town of Dinan, with easy access to Saint Malo, Rennes & Saint Brieuc.
You can be on the beach within 20 minutes, and plenty of golf courses to choose from.
If you are looking for an unusual house, low maintenance and peace & quiet, this house ticks all the boxes.

Le Tour de France – Brittany July 11th 2015

Saturday, July 11th – Stage 8 – 181.5km  Rennes / Mûr-de-Bretagne

The path to the heart of Brittany on the roads of the Côtes-d’Armor area puts an end to a period made for sprinters. The candidates for a leading role will indeed have to take command of the race. The battle for seconds will witness a new fierce episode on the final climb that will this time be made even harder without a previous surge. And the gaps at the finish, even reduced, could have severe consequences.

Sunday, July 12th – Stage 9 – 28km   Vannes / Plumelec

In just two days, the Tour will be visiting the two major sites of cycling in Brittany. The final showdown will however be different with the climb up the Côte de Cadoudal coming at the end of a 28-kilometre team time-trial. This test of strength and moment of truth will be awaited with anxiety by the main actors of the GC, especially because the final uphill part could influence on the choice of strategy.

Brittany village “best in France”

The village of Ploumanac’h in Brittany, has been ranked as the best village in the entire country, at least according to the viewers of “Village préféré des Français” on TV channel France 2.
The isolated coastal village, which is affectionately called Ploum by the locals, beat stiff competition from 21 other villages but came away with the crown in the two-hour programme .
The website Brittany Tourism has plenty to say about Ploumanac’h, singling out the Pink Granite Coast, which it called “one of the most beautiful stretches of Brittany’s coastline”.
Strange rock formations are a particular highlight of the area too, which the tourism site promises all change with the light. One is even shaped like Napoleon’s hat, the locals say.
There’s also more than a fair share of flora and fauna, including with the village dubbed by some as “the mecca” for birdwatchers.
But one of the main attractions is the sheer beauty of the area.
